Sean Dyche is expected to be named Everton manager today, as the Toffees seek to appoint a successor to Frank Lampard.Dyche has been without a club since leaving Burnley in 2022, and Everton fans will be hoping he can lift the club out of the Premier League relegation zone. But while some blue fans in Merseyside will be optimistic about Dyche’s appointment, some on the red side might react less positively given Dyche’s history with Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp. To give you an idea of why, we need to go back to January 2021 when Dyche’s Burnley side visited Anfield to face an out-of-form Liverpool team.

Sean Dyche rattling Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp

Klopp’s side had not won in the first few weeks of the New Year and had failed to score in their last four league games. But they were at home and were undefeated at Anfield in their last 68 league matches. Surely Burnley, who were just outside the relegation places before the game, would not be a problem?

Well, the Reds simply did not seem to have luck on their side, with Divock Origi hitting the crossbar in the first half. And things went from bad to worse in the second when Ashley Barnes converted a penalty to end Liverpool’s undefeated home streak.

Before the goal, though, Dyche and Klopp were involved in a small bust-up just before half-time when Klopp ran down the tunnel before the half ended. Barnes and Fabinho had clashed just before the end of the half, with VAR checking for a possible red card.

Klopp then returned to the pitch, but the check found no wrongdoing. Dyche then appeared to say something to Klopp as he walked down the tunnel, leaving the German manager angry and shouting.

With Dyche set to take the helm at Liverpool’s city rivals, can fans expect to see more of the same when Everton travel to Anfield in February?

What is wrong at Everton?

The atmosphere around Everton has become toxic in recent weeks, with fans protesting against the club’s board and ownership. Just two weeks ago, Everton’s directors were told to stay away from Goodison Park as Everton played Southampton due to a threat to their safety.

Fans then staged a protest after Everton lost the game, and although much of their anger stems from the board, results on the pitch have not exactly helped change the mood.

The club have not won a league game since October when they beat Crystal Palace, and have lost six of their last eight Premier League matches.

With the club joint bottom of the table, fans will be hoping Dyche, who survived relegation several times with Burnley, can help the club avoid the drop for the first time since 1951.
