Stone Cold Steve Austin was in talks with WWE to wrestle at SummerSlam last year, a new report has claimed.

After his return match at WrestleMania 38 against Kevin Owens, WWE is believed to have contacted Austin about wrestling against the July pay-per-view.

Nothing materialised, and Austin hasn't wrestled since WrestleMania last year, but he could be set to return to the ring at this year's event.

Was Stone Cold going to wrestle at SummerSlam 2022?

While nothing was reported at the time, it has now emerged that WWE wanted Stone Cold to wrestle at SummerSlam last year.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, following his match at WrestleMania 38, WWE contacted Austin about coming in for SummerSlam in July 2022, via WrestleTalk.

WWE had also talked of getting Austin for another match at SummerSlam last year.

At the time of writing, there's no word on who WWE wanted Stone Cold to face, or how advanced their negotiations were.

It's also worth noting that Vince McMahon only retired from WWE the week before SummerSlam, so he'd have been responsible for dealing with Austin and convincing him to have another match.

Of course, a match didn't come to fruition, and Stone Cold didn't feature on the SummerSlam card in any capacity.

Will Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestle at WrestleMania 39?

There are strong rumours that WWE is in deep talks with Austin about a match at WrestleMania 39 in April.

In fact, on Monday evening, it was reported that WWE had offered the Hall of Famer "enormous money" to return for a match with Roman Reigns at the big show this year.

However, that report was then followed up by another which claimed that Austin was also approached with the idea of facing Brock Lesnar in a never-seen-before dream match at WrestleMania 39.

At the time of writing, there's no word on if Austin has agreed to do either match, to something else entirely, but with WrestleMania fast approaching, fans shouldn't have to wait too long to find out.

GiveMeSport will, of course, keep you updated with all the latest news surrounding WWE's plans for WrestleMania, particularly involving Stone Cold Steve Austin.
