Park Ji-sung has admitted that he 'couldn't believe' Manchester United would be interested in signing him when he first heard that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring him to Old Trafford.

The 100-cap South Korean midfielder arrived at the 'Theatre of Dreams' in the summer of 2005 following a £4 million switch from PSV Eindhoven.

It ended up being money very well spent by the Red Devils as Park went on to win four Premier League titles and the 2007/08 Champions League during a seven-year stint with the club, becoming a cult hero with fans in the process.

In a clip recently shared by Supersport, Park recalled his initial reaction to being told he was on United's radar.

"I heard that Manchester United were interested in me. But I said to my agent, 'Don't even joke! It can't be true' I just laughed. I didn't believe it.

"On my way back from a game, he told me: 'Sir Alex Ferguson is waiting for your call'.

"I said: 'What? Don't joke with me!'

"He told me (again) it was true. Sir Alex called and we spoke on the phone."

Park then revealed that he was afraid to make the call, both because of the standard of his English and the reputation of the man on the other end of the line.

"I was quite afraid of taking the call because at the time, my English wasn't good enough," he admits. "He [Ferguson] spoke very slowly! The only thing I remember understanding was who he mentioned had joined United from PSV in the past. After that, I knew it was true."

As Park is retelling the story, he has a massive smile on his face - almost as though he's still in disbelief that it actually happened.

Before he could make the switch to the Premier League, though, Park explained that he wanted the blessing of then-PSV boss Guus Hiddink, such was the respect he had for the Dutchman.

"I had to think about what I was going to do. Normally, I would have just said I just wanted to go. But Guus Hiddink wasn't a normal coach. He was special. I needed his permission.

"I explained [to Hiddink] that I wanted to test myself. I wanted to see where I could go from there."

It's fair to say Park more than passed that test, racking up 205 appearances for the club, having become an integral part of Ferguson's United squad.

Although he departed Old Trafford to join Queens Park Rangers in 2012, Park's heart is very much still with the Red Devils.

Back in September, he even admitted that United's 2-1 Premier League home victory over Liverpool had meant more to him than his country's upset victory over Germany at the 2018 World Cup.

Park still loves United just as much as their fans love him. He was an absolute bargain at just £4m, too!
