A Trivela is a Portuguese word meaning ‘a technique where a player puts a curl or swerve on a shot or pass with the outside of the foot’ but in some dictionaries, the word is simply defined as Ricardo Quaresma; the original Trivela king.

In the Carabao Cup semi-final last night, it was Bruno Fernandes channelling his compatriot as he produced two outrageous Trivela passes, one of which led directly to Fred’s goal.

Who has he been learning from you might ask, well, none other than the Trivela professor himself.

When asked about the skill after the game, Fernandes said: "I learned from Quaresma, a great professor in Portugal. You have to learn from players, learn their tricks and use them."

Use them he certainly did as Manchester United booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with ease winning 2-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate against a Nottingham Forest side whose major concerns are remaining in the Premier League.

Two goals in three minutes, one from Anthony Martial after an injury absence and one from Fred were enough to confirm what was largely a formality.

Manchester United will now face Newcastle in a tasty looking final on February 26 as they look to win their first trophy since 2017.

On a night that included the long awaited return of Jadon Sancho, who had been sent for special individual training to improve his mental and physical state, it was a couple of moments of magic from Fernandes that stole the show on social media.

Bruno Fernandes' passing steals the show

The first was a stunning floating Trivela to England left-back Luke Shaw that could have put him in down the left-hand side of the penalty area had the defender's touch been better. The precision of the pass was perfect and it left the United fans roaring with appreciation.

The second was arguably even more spectacular as Fernandes picked out Marcus Rashford at the back post to square the ball to Fred, who bundled the ball in with his thigh from about a yard out.

The pass itself swerved gloriously over the heads of everyone in the box to find its way to an open Rashford, who was left with a relatively simple task as a result.

In a fantastic night for Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes gave football fans a reason to smile as we were reminded of just how spectacular a Trivela can be.

It really did bring back memories of a prime Quaresma for a couple of minutes.
