Tottenham Hotspur star Matt Doherty's impending loan move from Hotspur Way to Atletico Madrid is 'one of the shocks of the day', Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told GiveMeSport.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte's squad could have a new look by the time the transfer window slams shut at 11pm tonight.

Tottenham transfer news - Matt Doherty

According to MailOnline, Doherty is set to join Atletico Madrid on loan for the remainder of the campaign after seeing his opportunities limited at Tottenham.

The report suggests the right-back has travelled to the Spanish capital to rubber-stamp the switch and the agreement does not include an option or obligation to make the move permanent.

Doherty was due to undergo a medical ahead of his temporary departure from north London being completed earlier today.

The Irishman has entered the final 18 months of his £65,000-per-week contract at Tottenham and Pedro Porro's expected arrival would see him fall further down the pecking order.

Transfer insider Dean Jones recently told GiveMeSport that Spurs would look to offload Doherty or Emerson Royal if Conte strengthens his right wing-back options.

What has Michael Bridge said about Doherty?

Bridge understands that Doherty is on the verge of completing his loan move to Atletico Madrid with just hours of the window remaining.

The Sky Sports reporter believes the 31-year-old's impending switch to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium comes as a surprise.

Bridge told GiveMeSport: "Matt Doherty is on his way to Spain and La Liga under Diego Simeone. Quite a move this is, to Atletico Madrid.

"Doherty will be joining up again with fellow Tottenham teammate Sergio Reguilon in that Atletico Madrid side in, perhaps, one of the shocks of the day."

How has Doherty performed for Tottenham?

It is understandable that Tottenham are open to offloading Doherty on loan as, according to Transfermarkt, he has been restricted to just seven Premier League starts this season.

In fact, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man has only been afforded 878 minutes of action in all competitions since the campaign got underway.

Doherty has been on Tottenham's books since completing a £14.7million transfer two-and-a-half years ago.

Since his arrival in north London, he has racked up 11 goal contributions in 71 appearances but struggled to nail down a regular starting spot.

Sofascore statistics show Doherty has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.1 clearances and 0.7 interceptions per Premier League outing this season, but he is now set to test himself in La Liga with Atletico Madrid.
