Over £600 million spent this season. A spend of £323 million in the January transfer window alone. And a total of 18 players added to the club. Chelsea’s activity in the transfer market this season has been remarkable.

The squad has been revitalised and rebuilt in a time frame that many clubs would usually take several windows to achieve. Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are the best example of a rebuild in recent years, and they spent several seasons clearing out the deadwood and bringing in fresh talent.

And while that brings questions about whether Chelsea’s spending is in line with Financial Fair Play, the finished article is quite something to behold.

The final addition to the Chelsea squad came late last night, with the Blues finally agreeing on a deal with Benfica for the transfer of Enzo Fernandez. The west London side had pursued the World Cup winner throughout January and had to spend a British transfer record to prise him away from the Portuguese club.

Chelsea's busy January transfer window

Chelsea paid £105 million for Fernandez, which is extortionate given the fact he is only halfway through his first season with Benfica. Nevertheless, Chelsea’s owners were reportedly impressed with Fernandez’s performances at the World Cup. So much so that Behdad Eghbali refused to take no for an answer after 12 hours of negotiations.

Fernandez comes in as Jorginho’s replacement, who departed for Arsenal as he moved into the last six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge. He was Chelsea’s only outgoing this window, compared to the seven players who immediately joined the club.

Fernandez joins Chelsea this January along with Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashille, Malo Gusto, Noni Madueke, Andrey Santos, David Datro-Fofana and Joao Felix.

Those additions have turned Chelsea’s squad into a formidable one, with quality and cover now in every position.

The lineup includes Hakim Ziyech, who was supposed to join Paris Saint-Germain on loan only for the move to fall through.

And it is worth remembering that this graphic is missing a couple of other signings. Chelsea reportedly have a pre-contract agreement for the transfer of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig in the summer, while Gusto will permanently join in the summer after agreeing a transfer from Lyon.

Chelsea might be struggling in the Premier League at the moment, but they look to be a terrifying prospect from this point on.

However, you can imagine that it will be difficult for manager Graham Potter to keep all his players happy. The squad is now seemingly bloated in several positions, and certain players might struggle for regular minutes now. There could yet be a fire sale at Chelsea come the summer.

And more importantly, while injuries were used as an excuse for a drop in performance, Potter now has little to no excuse left for Chelsea residing in 10th place after adding all these players to his squad.

If performances don’t improve, might we see the Chelsea manager sacked this season?

The Blues face Fulham on February 3 at 8pm, with fans hoping to see some of their new recruits in action at Stamford Bridge.
