New Southampton striker Paul Onuachu has gone viral after footage emerged of him scoring 'the worst hat-trick ever' back in 2021.

The 28-year-old Nigeria international arrives in the Premier League off the back of 17 goals in all competitions for Genk this season.

With 16 of those goals coming in just 19 games in Belgium's Jupiter Pro League, Nathan Jones' side are banking on the six-foot seven-inch frontman to help lift them off the foot of the Premier League table.

While his recent goalscoring record is certainly worthy of praise, Onuachu has attracted most attention on social media for his bizarre hat-trick against RFC Seraing back in September 2021.

To be fair to the Saints' new boy, a hat-trick is a hat-trick regardless of the circumstances.

However, none of his trio of strikes will end up on his career highlight reel.

You can check it out in all its 'glory' below.

Onuachu opened the scoring in the 41st minute when he found the back of the net from one yard out. Immediately prior to that, though, he mis-kicked the ball from point-blank range and almost lost the ball to a defender on the line.

The striker discovered that his luck was really in when he scored his second of the match shortly afterwards.

Having seen his ridiculously tame shot saved by goalkeeper Guillaume Dietsch, the ball fell straight to Onuachu, who managed to steer the ball into the bottom left corner to bag his brace.

When Genk were awarded a penalty-kick in the second-half, Onuachu had the chance to claim the match ball, which he duly converted.

In truth, he only kicked the ball straight down the middle to secure his hat-trick, but it was still somehow his best-taken goal of the match.

Footage of Onuachu's underwhelming landmark quickly began to do the rounds on Twitter - with much of the reaction being unflattering. We've included the best responses below.

Can Paul Onuachu help Southampton avoid relegation from the Premier League?

With the Saints currently rooted to the bottom of the English top-flight, it was no surprise to see them splash out on a striker at the end of the January transfer window.

Despite going viral for one of the least impressive hat-tricks in football history, the physically-imposing frontman certainly knows the way to goal. Across his career, Onuachu has scored 164 times in 329 games.

Southampton, who have scored just 17 goals in 20 Premier League games so far this season, could seriously do with Onuachu replicating that sort of form if they are to beat the drop.
