Southampton have been crying out for the signings of Genk striker Paul Onuachu and Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana at St. Mary’s, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Saints completed a combined £40m swoop for the pair on Deadline Day as Nathan Jones looks to keep the club in the Premier League.

Southampton transfer news – Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana

Southampton proved to be one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League on Deadline Day and will have been happy with the attacking additions they were able to get over the line.

Onuachu was the first through the door at St. Mary’s with the 6 foot 7 striker signing for £18m plus add-ons, meaning Jones has a genuine centre-forward option to compete with Ché Adams and Adam Armstrong.

Sulemana arrived soon after, with the Saints spending a club-record fee of £22m to bring the winger to the south coast outfit, eclipsing the £20m spent on adding Danny Ings to their ranks in the summer of 2019.

Jones has recently suggested to GiveMeSport that Southampton owners Sport Republic had no choice but to spend if they wanted to give the former Luton Town manager the best possible chance of keeping the club in the top flight.

And the journalist believes that the Premier League outfit’s squad “does look better.”

What has Jones said about Southampton?

When speaking about Southampton’s squad following the transfer window, Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think on the surface, this does look better. It looks like they'll have more goal threat, which is what they've been crying out for.

“We won't know how they translate until we see them on the pitch and how this works in reality. It can't be any worse, that's the one thing I would say.”

Will Onuachu and Sulemana be good signings for Southampton?

There is no doubt that Southampton required alternative options in the attacking third of the pitch, with the Premier League’s basement side only having hit the back of the net 17 times in the top flight this season.

Onuachu’s presence should go some way to solving that issue because the 18-cap Nigeria international has already bagged 17 goals in 22 appearances for Genk this campaign.

Meanwhile, Sulemana has been restricted to just one strike in 20 showings for Rennes, but having only played 536 minutes of football for the Ligue 1 outfit this term, he will be hoping that opportunities aren’t so hard to come by under the management of Jones.

Therefore, Southampton will be hopeful that their Deadline Day additions can fire them off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone come the end of the season.
