Enzo Fernandez is officially the most expensive footballer in Premier League history. At the very end of deadline day, Chelsea pulled off the signing of the 2022 World Cup winner on an eight-and-a-half year deal. The transfer fee coughed up for Fernandez is a whopping £106 million and it will be paid in several instalments. It was the deal which topped off Chelsea's winter of lavish spending, which included the signings of Mykhaylo Mudryk, Joao Felix, Benoit Badashile and more. For most of the January window, it appeared the Blues would have to wait until the summer to get Fernandez on board. The Premier League outfit saw their earlier advances repelled by Benfica - and the player himself even hinted that a winter move was out of the question. After making his return to the Portuguese side's starting XI against Varzim on January 10th, Fernandez scored the team's second goal. His prior absence was due to the transfer rumours surrounding him and Chelsea, so to mark the comeback, he chose to bring out the 'I'm staying' celebration.Safe to say Fernandez's actions have aged like milk...

Yeah, it probably wasn't the wisest move by Fernandez, as he must've known there was a significant chance Chelsea would return to try and sign him later in the window.

Especially with Todd Boehly seemingly on a one-man mission to break every single transfer-related record known to man.

What is Fernandez's Benfica record like?

The signing of Fernandez is being viewed with scepticism by some over the fact he's played so few games in European football.

Fernandez was signed from River Plate only last summer and featured in 29 games overall for Benfica.

In that time, he scored four goals and contributed seven assists, with his performances earning him a spot in Argentina's World Cup squad.

Out in Qatar, Fernandez was something of a revelation after initially starting the tournament as a squad player.

The 22-year-old broke into Lionel Scaloni's XI after scoring against Mexico in the group stage and was chosen to start in the epic final victory over France, before scooping the Young Player of the Tournament award.

So there's no doubting Fernandez is a talent, however, the lack of appearances for a player who cost over £100 million is an understandable concern.

Only time will tell whether those concerns are worthwhile...
