Arsenal transfer news – Jorginho

Heading into the final day of the January transfer window, Arteta was still looking for an extra body to add to his already strong midfield, as he looks to sustain a title challenge with the Gunners during the second half of the season.

After having a £70m bid turned down by Brighton & Hove Albion for the services of Ecuadorian talent Moisés Caicedo, the north London outfit turned their attention to the experienced Chelsea star, who signed on the dotted line for a transfer fee of £12m.

Jacobs has also told GiveMeSport that Arteta was the driving force behind the club’s move for Jorginho before the winter window’s closure.

And the journalist says that the Spanish head coach could be “really pleased” after acquiring the services of the 31-year-old on an 18-month contract.

What has Jacobs said about Arsenal and Jorginho?

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “I understand Arsenal fans might look at it and say they'd have preferred Caicedo in the long term. But Jorginho has only signed an 18-month deal with a one-year extension.

“This is about Arsenal bringing somebody in for the now, that can help them get over the line with the Premier League and in doing so qualify for the Champions League.

“I think that Mikel Arteta is just really pleased because it's the right fit for Arsenal's project and culture.”

Will Jorginho be a good signing for Arsenal?

Jorginho – who has previously been described as a “beast” by writer Mark Worrall – could prove to be an excellent signing for Arsenal as they look to secure their first Premier League title in 20 years, with the experienced midfielder having competed for titles at the top-level throughout his career.

The 46-time Italy international has won honours at both international and club level, having won both Euro 2020 and the Champions League with during the 2020/21 season.

However, the Imbituba-born star will feel that a departure from Stamford Bridge was required after having only played in 69% of available Premier League minutes this season.

The 5 foot 10 dynamo compares favourably to his positional peers, ranking in the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s big five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for passes attempted (71.99) and top 12% and 13% for interceptions (1.61) and tackles per 90 minutes (2.88) respectively over the last 365 days, according to FBref.

Therefore, Arteta has every reason to be delighted that he has secured the services of such an experienced figurehead for the dressing room ahead of the business end of the Premier League campaign.
