Manchester City are facing serious charges in relation to the breaching of financial rules.

On Monday, the footballing world was sent into a state of shock when the Premier League released a statement after completing a four-year investigation.

In it, they confirmed City have been charged with over 100 offences between September 2009 and the end of the 2017/18 season - a season in which they won the title by amassing 100 points.

City have since released a statement of their own, which reads: "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

"The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

"As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all."

It really is bombshell news in the footballing sphere, news that will almost certainly dominate the Premier League narrative for quite some time.

City manager Pep Guardiola will have to face some very tough questions relating to the issue in upcoming press conferences.

Although it won't be the first time it's happened to the former Barcelona boss.

Back in May of 2019, just after City had clinched a domestic treble by winning the FA Cup, Guardiola was asked about the club's finances by journalist, Rob Harris.

Harris said: "There's one big question the club haven't answered... Roberto Mancini was discovered to have had separate payments from Abu Dhabi while he was manager. Have you ever had separate payments from Abu Dhabi while City manager?"

Footage of Guardiola's response has re-emerged in the wake of Monday's update from the Premier League and it's safe to say he was not a happy bunny...

Guardiola's various facial expressions said it all, but unfortunately for him, it was a question that simply had to be asked.

Get ready for some tougher ones in the near future, Pep.

The next time Guardiola speaks in front of the media will be just prior to Sunday's match at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

It's certainly not going to be the build-up to the must-win fixture that the Spaniard wanted, far from it in fact.
