Arsenal centre-back William Saliba could sign a new contract in February or March now that the January transfer window has concluded at the Emirates Stadium, journalist Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

The £40,000 per-week earner’s current contract with Mikel Arteta’s side is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Arsenal contract news – William Saliba

Saliba has enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign at the Emirates this season and looks set to be rewarded with a new contract, after a string of impressive performances from the centre-back that have helped the Gunners to the top of the Premier League.

Head coach Arteta has indicated that he hopes Gabrielle Martinelli’s recent extension will be the first of multiple new deals for some of the Gunners’ key players as they look to secure their first league title since 2003, saying: “Part of the plan obviously is to extend the contracts of our biggest talents at the club and commit them to the future. We are trying to do that.”

Journalist Paul Brown has recently told GiveMeSport that tying Saliba and Bukayo Saka down to new deals will be one of the highest priorities at this moment at the Emirates.

And Romano believes that Saliba could sign a new deal either this month or next, with agents more focused on potential transfer moves during January.

What has Romano said about Arsenal and Saliba?

When talking about Saliba’s new contract, Romano told GiveMeSport: “Let's see about the timing because we know that agents were busy during the market. Sometimes the contract extensions go to February and March because they focus on different players during the January market, and then move on to the contract extensions in different moments.”

How has Saliba performed this season?

Saliba – who is “untouchable” to Arsenal according to Romano – has been in excellent form this season and has no doubt endeared himself to the Gunners faithful.

The eight-cap France international has made 20 Premier League appearances this season, bagging two goals whilst providing one assist as well as helping the side keep nine clean sheets as they look to march towards the title.

The 6 foot 4 defender is also an exceptional passer of the ball from the back, as shown by the fact he ranks in the top 5% of centre-backs across Europe’s big five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for pass success rate (91.9%) and top 4% for passes attempted per 90 minutes (76.05) over the last 365 days, according to FBref.

It looks as though Saliba has proven himself to be a centre-back of the highest quality throughout his first campaign as a regular starter at Arsenal and the Gunners faithful will be desperate to see him extend his stay in north London.
