Not a single player from last season's PFA Team of the Year will make the 2022/23 edition.

It will be the second time ever that the entire Premier League Team of the Season has completely changed for one campaign to the next.

Of course, considering we're only halfway through the 2022/23 season there is still plenty of time for players to force their way into the reckoning.

But, as things stand, it would be a huge surprise if any member of 2021/22 XI makes it.

Let's remind ourselves of the players who earned a spot last season, shall we? And why they're unlikely to make it this time around...

Last season's PFA Team of the Year

Goalkeeper: Alisson

Alisson certainly hasn't had a bad season from an individual point of view but with Liverpool in 10th and having conceded the same number of goals as Everton, there are plenty more deserving candidates out there.

Right back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold hasn't been at his brilliant best this season with just one assist. He's struggled defensively, too.

Left back: Joao Cancelo

Cancelo has left Manchester City for Bayern Munich and didn't reach his high standards before that.

Centre back: Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has struggled with injury this season and even when fit, didn't look at the top of his game.

Centre back: Antonio Rudiger

Rudiger left Chelsea for Real Madrid in the summer so hasn't played a minute of Premier League football this season.

Midfield: Bernardo Silva

Silva is still a fantastic player but he hasn't been quite as good this season with Manchester City off the pace set by Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

Midfield: Thiago

Thiago has probably been Liverpool's best midfielder this season but that's not exactly saying much.

Midfield: Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne was dropped for Man City's trip to Tottenham last weekend which says a lot. At times, he's been brilliant but not at the same level as last season. He's perhaps got the best chance of making the 2022/23 team.

Right wing: Sadio Mane

Mane left Liverpool for Bayern Munich in the summer. How they probably wish they didn't allow him to leave now...

Left wing: Mohamed Salah

Salah scored 23 league goals last season as Liverpool narrowly missed out on the title. This time around, he's got just seven to his name and appears to be a shadow of his former self.

Striker: Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo's 18 goals last season were enough to see him named in the PFA Team of the Year. But the Portuguese managed just one in the first half of this campaign before his unceremonious exit from Manchester United.

Possible 2022/23 PFA Team of the Year

So, how could this year's Team of the Year look?

Goalkeeper: Nick Pope

Pope has conceded just 12 goals this season and we're giving him the edge over Aaron Ramsdale.

Right back: Kieran Trippier

Not long ago, Trippier was rated as England's fourth-best right back behind Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James. This season, he's been the best in the league.

Left back: Oleksandr Zinchenko

What an inspired signing Zinchenko has proven to be for Arsenal. His leadership and versatility have been massive for Mikel Arteta's side.

Centre back: William Saliba

Last season, Saliba was on loan at Marseille. This season, he's been faultless in Arsenal's back line.

Centre back: Fabian Schar

Three Newcastle players made up the back five. Considering they have the best defence in the league by some distance, we make no apologies for that. Schar just edges out his partner, Sven Botman.

Midfield: Casemiro

Casmiro has come in and helped transform this Manchester United side. His presence in midfield has seen United bounce back from a difficult start to threaten the top of the table.

Midfield: Martin Odegaard

Arsenal's skipper has led by example this season with eight goals and six assists in 19 matches. Could he be lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of the season?

Midfield: Thomas Partey

Partey has also been sensational in the midfield for Arsenal. Many Gooners believe the only thing that will stop them from winning the league right now is an injury to the Ghanaian. He's that important.

Right wing: Bukayo Saka

While Gabriel Jesus has been sidelined for months and Gabriel Martinelli has lacked form recently, Saka has been consistently brilliant for the Gunners. seven goals and seven assists represents a strong return.

Left wing: Marcus Rashford

Rashford is in the form of his life right now. He's scored 11 in 22 in the Premier League this season.

Striker: Erling Haaland

Even if Haaland doesn't score between now and the end of the season, he'll still be named in the PFA Team of the Year. The Man City man may have slowed down but he's still bagged 25 goals in 20 matches and broken all sorts of records in his debut campaign.
