There was an absolute humdinger of a match at St James’ Park this evening as Newcastle United recorded a last-gasp 4-3 victory over Norwich City.

The Canaries thought they’d wrapped up all three points after Jacob Murphy put the visitors 3-1 ahead.

But Rafa Benitez’s men launched a stunning comeback, scoring two goals in the fifth and sixth minutes of stoppage time, to turn the match on its head.

Gayle scored the winner - completing his hat-trick in the process - but he probably wished someone else had scored it after the crazy manner in which his teammate, Aleksandar Mitrovic, celebrated.

Mitrovic, caught up in the moment, grabbed the goalscorer around the neck before throwing him to the ground.

It was a strange celebration, but one which appears to have endeared him to the Newcastle United faithful even more.

Newcastle climb to third place in the Championship table thanks to this evening’s memorable win.

Only Huddersfield and Norwich are above the Magpies, as things stand.

Benitez: We deserved to win

“To feel the fans here when you are scoring goals and winning the game was amazing. I think that we deserved to win,” Benitez was quoted as saying by the Chronicle after the match.

“In the first half we deserved to be ahead easily against a good team. The second half was incredible at 3-1 down.

“We didn’t start well in the second half after one or two mistakes but still the team reacted and pushing.

“They played five at the back and we dropped off a little bit. Then we were in attack.

“And for all the bad luck in the first half we had good luck in the second half. In the end we deserved to win.”
