We have to wait until January 9 to discover who will win the 2016 Ballon d’Or but that doesn’t stop everyone speculating about who the best player in European football.

Cristiano Ronaldo is favourite to win the accolade for the fourth time but that doesn’t mean people will be satisfied to call him the best player in Europe.

That’s because a certain Lionel Messi has won the same award on five occasions with many believing the Argentine is the greatest player to have played the game.

Whether you’re team Ronaldo or team Messi, one thing is for sure, the pair have dominated football in recent years.

In fact, you’ll have to go back to 2007 to find a Ballon d’Or winner that wasn’t Messi or Ronaldo, when Kaka was recognised with his incredible ability.

If Ronaldo does win the accolade in January, it will mean the Portuguese star has won three of the previous four awards.

However, Brazilian legend Cafu doesn’t think the Real Madrid star has the best player in recent years. While the likes of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann may also feel they deserve to be called the best footballer in recent years, Cafu still thinks that award should go to Messi.

While doing a Q&A for the official Champions League Twitter account, Cafu was asked who has been the best player in the last 20 years. Although the former Roma and AC Milan defender couldn’t name the best in the last two decades, he believes Messi is the best in the last few years.

There will no doubt be plenty of people that disagree with Cafu but it’s well worth noting his incredible career before you question him.

Almost 400 appearances in Italy representing Roma and Milan, the most-capped player for Brazil with 142, two Serie A titles, a Champions League and two World Cups.

It’s fair to say Cafu knows his football.
