If ever there was a time when West Ham needed their star man Dimitri Payet to step up to the plate, it was today.

The Hammers were trailing at home to Middlesborough as their poor start to the Premier League campaign looked set to continue.

Christian Stuani’s goal in the 51st minute heaped the pressure on Slaven Bilic with the Irons hovering around the relegation zone.

But Payet had other ideas.

Six minutes after his side had gone behind, Payet hauled West Ham back into the match with a simply incredible solo goal.

The Frenchman received the ball with his back to goal on the left-wing and it didn’t look as though Middlesborough were under any pressure.

But this is Payet we’re talking about.

He beat one man with a brilliant turn, cut inside another defender and made his way into the box. But there were still three defenders between him and the goal.

Not an issue.

A few stepovers, a few dummies and a few drops of the shoulder saw him beat the trio of scrambling defenders before calmly finishing. It was simply sensational.

Take a look at the outrageous goal below:

Unsurprisingly, Twitter went wild at Payet’s goal branding it the ‘goal of the season’ - check out the best responses below:

Payet’s equaliser gave West Ham a way back into the match as they looked to earn just their second win of the campaign.

Of course, this isn’t the first sensational goal Payet has scored in the claret and blue of West Ham. The 29-year-old scored a handful of incredible free-kicks for Bilic’s side last season and his performances helped them qualify for a Europa League place.

However, they have already been knocked out of that competition and have started the league campaign extremely poorly, despite Payet’s qualities.

Payet has already produced an incredible rabona assist for Michail Antonio this season during their 4-2 defeat to Watford, but this goal even eclipses that superb piece of skill.
