The United States is in the midst of arguably one of its most fascinating and controversial presidential elections in recent history.

As the battle between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump hots up, many public figures have had their say on the candidacies of the pair.

However, the views of some people provide headlines more than others and that is certainly the case when the biggest star in basketball openly endorses one of the candidates.

LeBron James has decided to publicly give his backing to Clinton over Trump and has provided several reasons for his choice.

"When I look at this year’s presidential race, it’s clear which candidate believes the same thing," he said. "Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty. And when I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear.

"That candidate is Hillary Clinton."

With the new NBA season just weeks away and LeBron and his Cleveland Cavalier teammates involved in their pre-season training camp, it may have come as a surprise that the three-time champion took time out to discuss political matters.

But judging by the work that LBJ does with kids in his LeBron James Family Foundation in Akron - they started a program in 2015 that would give 1,100 kids the chance to attend college for free - education is a big factor in why he wants Clinton to become the nation's next leader, as well as her message to unite the country.

"I do know we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified. Policies and ideas that divide us more are not the solution. We must all stand together — no matter where we are from or the colour of our skin. And Hillary is running on the message of hope and unity that we need."

Ohio has the seventh-most electoral votes of all states and is usually seen as one of the states that can tip the scale in elections and the Cavs superstar has urged members of his community to vote and support Clinton's campaign to become the next president.

"There’s still a lot of work to be done in Akron, Northeast Ohio, and all across our great country. We need a president who understands our community and will build on the legacy of President Obama. So let’s register to vote, show up to the polls, and vote for Hillary Clinton."
