With a two week absence of Premier League football, now is the perfect time to look back on the couple of months of action that we’ve witnessed.
Every side has now played seven matches and the league table is starting to take shape.
Manchester City go into the international break sitting on top of the league, despite losing 2-0 to Tottenham in the previous outing.
While City have been the top team, who has been the top player?
It’s easy to give an opinion to suggest who has been the most impressive but it’s even better with evidence.
Therefore, thanks to stats company Oulala - powered by Opta - we’ve discovered the best player of the Premier League season so far.
Oulala have analysed all 414 players that have played in the top-flight this campaign and decided on who they think has been the best player so far based on numbers.
The winner? Philippe Coutinho.
So, how did they come to that conclusion?
The Brazilian has bagged three league goals for The Reds this season during his seven appearances, making him the 13th top goalscorer overall - the sixth most goals by any midfielder.
He’s also had a massive 29 shots, only second behind Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has had 38 attempts. Of those 29 shots, 19 of them have been taken from outside the box - placing him second behind Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend with 20.
One of Coutinho’s strengths on the pitch is his dribbling ability, highlighted by the 17 successful take-ons he’s completed - the ninth best in the league.
He’s also made 14 key passes and created 16 chances in his seven matches. The 24-year-old has registered two assists in the league this season with a pass completion of 85%.
But in a Jurgen Klopp side, Coutinho is expected to work hard defensively and he has done just that making 10 successful tackles.
In all, Coutinho ranked in the top 13 of all players in six key areas - seen in the graphic above - which shows exactly why he's statistically the Premier League's best player.
