Wayne Rooney was deployed in a deeper role by new England boss Gareth Southgate against Malta this evening.

However, the out-of-form Manchester United captain failed to make a significant impact alongside Jordan Henderson and Dele Alli.

It wasn’t a terrible performance by Rooney - although he was mocked on social media during the first half after a Malta player embarrassed him with a neat little nutmeg. (Scroll down to watch the video and see the reaction on Twitter).

The Maltese player briefly paused as he approached Rooney, who stood still and found himself on the receiving end of a well-executed nutmeg.

Twitter did not go easy on the England skipper.
