Anyone that has witnessed Lionel Messi play on more than a handful of occasions would have noticed that, somewhat surprisingly, he likes to walk around the field of play.

The Argentine superstar may well be recognised as one of the greatest players of all-time, but that doesn't stop him from taking it easy on the odd occasion.

But is he actually taking it easy? Well, according to one man that knows him very well, he 'distances' himself on the pitch for a reason.

Indeed, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who managed Messi for four years at Barcelona, has insisted that Messi 'runs the least in La Liga' because he's analysing where everyone is.

Speaking to Marti Perarnau, as per Marca, Guardiola stated: "Look at Messi when he’s out there, it looks like he’s walking around the pitch….he sees that he’s alone; when he sees that they’re watching him, he distances himself.

Messi walking

"Messi spends the game walking, x-raying every single moment. He’s the player who runs the least in La Liga – but when the ball comes to him, he has the complete X-ray of space/time. He knows exactly where everyone is. And then Pam!"

Well, it's fair to say that the next time you see Messi strolling around the pitch, you will think twice before calling him lazy...

Knowledge of the game

In fact, Messi's understanding of the game has also been praised by his national team manager.

Edgardo Bauza has admitted that Messi's knowledge of football surprised him. As per The Guardian, he stated: “What surprised me is how much he knows about football, because he knows everything, about his teammates, the technical team, about football. He’s aware of everything.

“I always thought a player of his standing would have to be a player who knew a lot about football. But he surprised me even more than I thought. Leo knows everything about everything. Nothing escapes him. He has a very important understanding and this helps when one has to communicate their idea.”
