Paul Pogba served us a reminder of just why he’s the most expensive player in the world in France’s 1-0 win over the Netherlands last night.
The Manchester United star struck the winner, a 35-yard screamer finding its way past Maarten Stekelenburg as Les Bleus emerged victorious in arguably the toughest World Cup qualifier they will play.
Travelling to the Amsterdam ArenA, France boss Didier Deschamps will have been hoping for Pogba to inspire his teammates to victory. And he did just so with a superfluous performance.
Under increasing adversity, too. The £89 million has come under criticism for his recent efforts, both from United and France supporters, but he silenced them on Monday evening.
The best moment of the night was his goal, but Pogba also displayed his wonderful passing ability. One such pass demonstrated the 23-year-old’s ability to pick out his target.
Pogba's exquisite ball to Gameiro
In the 55th minute, Pogba played a perfectly-weighted pass to Kevin Gameiro, who couldn't fire past Stekelenburg. Go to 4:54 in the video below to see it.
Yet that wasn't Pogba's only fine ball of the evening.
Pogba's second pass
Under pressure in the centre of the pitch, Pogba calmly plays a pass out wide. The ball is quickly returned to him and, without even taking a touch, he flings it with his left foot after spotting his teammate’s surging run.
It was perfect placement from the former Juventus man, who also showcased his fine vision.
Pogba was given a rating of four out of 10 for his performance in Friday’s 4-1 win against Bulgaria by L’Equipe.
The same paper graded his display against the Netherlands as eight out of 10.
A lot can change in four days; Pogba is a star again in the eyes of the French.
