WWE were dealt a huge blow earlier this year when it was announced that Shelton Benjamin wouldn't be returning to the squared circle as planned.
Benjamin was close to making a dramatic return to SmackDown LIVE following years away from the company, but after undergoing all the medical tests and the health checkups, WWE highlighted the shoulder injury which was in need of surgery.
The former Tag Team Champion had to have surgery on a torn rotator cuff, the same injury that has currently sidelined Erick Rowan as well, and he's expected to be sidelined for around six months.

Benjamin is hopeful of making a return to WWE around WrestleMania season, with February and March his target, and he's announced on his Twitter that he's fit enough to do meet-and-greets now and signing sessions.
However, he still can't do anything physical, and that is unlikely to change until the new year, but it looks like WWE are still eager to use him on SmackDown LIVE.
As previously reported, both Vince McMahon and Triple H are admirers of Benjamin's ring work and that is a key reason behind them wanting to keep him despite the injury he sustained.
The 41-year-old was set for his return and was likely to receive a mid-card push, potentially feuding for the Intercontinental Championship, but due to his injury, those plans have now changed.
According to Wrestling News, WWE are waiting for him to be medically cleared, and will then reintroduce him to the WWE Universe, but will only use him to push over younger talent.
The return plans for Benjamin are slightly underwhelming, so it wouldn't come as a surprise if they were to change from now to then.
