Twitter slam one England player for his performance against Slovenia

It was supposed to be a fairly comfortable three points against Slovenia but, then again, this is England we’re talking about.

Gareth Southgate and co. will consider themselves fairly fortunate to escape with just a point after Joe Hart made some heroic saves to keep the scores at 0-0.

At the other end, the Three Lions failed to create any clear-cut chances and rarely troubled Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak in the Slovenia goal.

While it was a pretty dire performance from almost everyone wearing a red shirt, there was one player trending on Twitter for all the wrong reasons.

With captain Wayne Rooney sitting on the bench, it was up to Daniel Sturridge to lead the line for England. However, the Liverpool forward struggled in the lone striker role, and failed to hold the ball up sufficiently to bring his teammates into place.

Instead, the 27-year-old opted to have several ambitious efforts at goal when his teammates were in better positions.

It was for that reason that many England fans took to Twitter to slam the former Manchester City and Chelsea forward for his greediness and lack of awareness.

Check out some of the reaction to his performance below:

Of course, Sturridge was far from the only bad performer on the pitch but it seemed that it was he that got the most criticism on social media.

Sturridge may point to the fact that he hasn’t started too many matches this season with Jurgen Klopp choosing Roberto Firmino to start up top for Liverpool this season, ahead of the England man.

And, if Klopp was watching England tonight, Sturridge may find himself on the bench once again for the visit of Manchester United next Monday at Anfield.

But the whole England side, barring Hart, didn’t do themselves justice against Slovenia tonight and it won’t just be Sturridge who can be disappointed with their display.
