Football News

It has taken the San Francisco 49ers to fall to 1-4 for their head coach Chip Kelly to finally review his quarterback situation.

Kelly - in his first year at the 49ers made the announcement in the off-season that Blaine Gabbert would be his starting quarterback.

A long time coming

It was announced on Tuesday that Kelly will be benching his starter and will be replacing him with one of the more controversial figures in the league right now.

Who should be the 49ers starting Quarterback? Have your say by signing up now to become a GMS writer:

Colin Kaepernick - the man who took the 49ers to Super Bowl XXVII before a dramatic fall from grace last season will get his second chance on Sunday.

The 49ers play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a match that will see them as the underdogs against Rex Ryan.

The 49ers made a good start to the season, winning their opening match against the LA Rams, but since then have lost four straight leading to fans becoming quite critical of Gabbert.

The former starter hasn't had a good season, Gabbert has only thrown over 200 yards in one game all season and has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns.

During their last loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday last week, fans in attendance at Levi Stadium began to chant that they wanted to see Kaepernick take the field.

They didn't get their wish that night, but they will see him take over on Sunday and he will surely be hoping that he can find form once again.

Kaepernick had a QB rating of 47.14% before being benched last year, so the question is, is this just a huge example of how much trouble the 49ers are in at quarterback?
