The WWE's developmental brand, NXT, continues to go from strength to strength over the past couple of years.

It has gifted the main roster two of its current world champions in Kevin Owens and Becky Lynch, and it also gifted Raw a world champion in Finn Balor before he was injured at SummerSlam.

There have been plenty more of popular acts to make their way to the promise land too, and much of the promotion's success has to be attributed to the vision of Triple H.

Many would argue that NXT is a brand in itself now, and not just the training ground for the WWE main roster. As such, international stars like Rhyno - now back on the main roster on SmackDown Live - and Jushin Thunder Liger have made appearances in NXT.

Now, a former world champion is making their return to the WWE and their first bit of business will take place at Takeover: Toronto the night before WWE Survivor Series.

Former diva Mickie James will take on current NXT women's champion Asuka for the gold and she brings plenty of pedigree with her. As a former six-time world champion in the WWE, James had five spells as the Women's champion and one run with the Diva's belt.

In November 2013, James served as guest trainer at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida for a week, training WWE NXT's female wrestlers. She also attended that week's NXT live event in Tampa, Florida, but then returned to the independent scene.

James has had a couple of spells in TNA where she is a three-time world champion, but she was an extremely popular superstar in the WWE before her departure in 2010 and has been missed since.

A return six years in the waiting, the charismatic 37-year-old still has plenty of gas left in the tank and this match is sure to be one of the finest in 2016.
