David de Gea is now widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

And there are some football fans - and not just those of a Manchester United persuasion - who now believe De Gea is the best in the world, ahead of Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

De Gea, United’s Player of the Year for the past three seasons, was outstanding against Liverpool last Monday, making two vital stops to earn his side a valuable point.

But five days on from his heroic performance at Anfield and Mark Schwarzer, the experienced former Premier League shot-stopper, has caused a stir on social media by claiming there’s one goalkeeper who’s better than the Spaniard.

Schwarzer was speaking live on BBC’s Match of the Day while analysing the 0-0 draw between Arsenal and Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium.

Schwarzer: Cech is better than De Gea

“For me, Petr Cech is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League,” Schwarzer said.

Sounding a little surprised, Gary Lineker interrupted the Australian by asking: “Better than De Gea?”

“I think he is,” Schwarzer responded. “I had the privilege of working with him and I class him as a good mate. He’s an incredible professional.”
