Football News

There was a time a few years ago when David Villa was amongst the most lethal strikers in football.

Making a name for himself by banging in the goals for Valencia, Villa went on to lead the line with great success for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and showed an uncanny ability to find the back of the net from almost any angle.

Now seeing out his career in Major League Soccer with New York City FC, the 34-year-old marksman showed he has still got it over the weekend by producing a truly outrageous curling effort on the final day of MLS' regular season. Somehow, though, the ball stayed out of the net despite hitting both posts.

Because the ball didn't actually cross the line, we suppose the below video has to be described as a "near moment of magic". However, it might just be us, but the fact that the ball somehow failed to cross the white line despite hitting both uprights makes it even more of a mesmerizing attempt.

From the casual flick of the right boot and unreal levels of curl Villa is able to put on his shot, to the helpless effort of the opposition goalkeeper and Villa's cheeky grin at the end of the video, there's so much to love about the snippet of action.

The game was actually goalless at the time of Villa's spectacular attempt but the Spanish veteran was left smiling at the full-time whistle after NYCFC secured a comfortable 4-1 win.

Villa and co. will now head into the MLS playoffs in confident mood, but they'll be hoping for a little better luck the next time their star striker gets hold of the ball in the box.
