Following Saturday's 1-0 win over Juventus, AC Milan will have harboured hopes of ending the Old Lady's dominance in Serie A by winning the title this season.
The victory saw the Rossoneri close the gap at the top to two points with nine games played.
Vincenzo Montella's side then had the chance to go top on Tuesday night when they travelled to face 12th-placed Genoa, albeit having played one game more than Juve.

However, Milan once again fluffed their lines and lost 3-0.
Nikola Ninkovic gave Genoa the lead inside 11 minutes at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, but it was Gabriel Paletta's straight red card just before the hour mark that ultimately lost the game.
And what a horrendous tackle it was. In the video below, Paletta charged down Luca Rigoni on the left channel before jumping - literally - into a two-footed challenge, completely wiping out the Italian winger.
OUCH...
Genuinely one of the worst tackles we've ever seen...
Montella, who will have been furious with Paletta's reckless mistake, recently insisted Milan are keeping a "low profile" amid suggestions of a challenge for the Scudetto.
"I can feel the air of Europe now," he told Mediaset prior to the Juventus clash, per Goal. "On Saturday we play against Juve, one of the best teams in Europe.
"Is it a Scudetto clash? Certain situations are not for us, we are keeping a low profile. Milan have been out of Europe for too long.
"I see the lads smiling now, as they needed confidence and good results help."
With the talent in Milan's squad, they're more than capable of launching a title bid - it's discipline that might ultimately work against them.
