If Jose Mourinho thought that it would be an easy task returning Manchester United to the summit of English football, he’s already realised that definitely won’t be the case.
Three defeats in the Premier League has seen his side sit six points off the pace of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the league after just nine matches.
The Portuguese boss is starting to realise which players fit his system - and which players he doesn’t want at the club.
Mourinho is certainly no stranger to banishing players that he doesn’t fit in his plans - see Bastian Schweinsteiger for the most recent example of that.
And, as well as Schweinsteiger, it seems Mourinho has seen enough of another two players to decide that they don’t warrant a place in his squad in the future.
That’s because, according to the Daily Mail, he is considering selling both Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian in January.
Their report claims that Mourinho doesn’t think the two defenders have a future at the club and he will seek potential suitors when the transfer window re-opens.
Selling Rojo could leave Mourinho short in central defence with the Argentine deputising in that position after injuries to Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly. The Argentine has played seven times in all competitions and started against Manchester City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Despite the Mail claiming that Mourinho wants to see the back of Rojo, he sang his praises for his performance during the 1-0 win.
“We are used to playing with Bailly and Smalling but we have lost both to injury,” Mourinho explained to MUTV after the game.
“We had to play with two left-footed central defenders and Marcos had not played for a while, but he played phenomenally.”
However, it’s been a tough start to the campaign for Italian right-back Darmian. Mourinho has preferred Antonio Valencia in the right-back position with Darmian rarely getting a game this season.
With Darmian and Rojo set to leave, Mourinho realises he needs to sign another defender. Therefore, again according to the Daily Mail, he’s identified Roma’s Antonio Rudiger as the ideal solution.
The 23-year-old Germany international can play right-back and centre-back and has been watched regularly by United scouts this season. He’s regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in European football but it’s believed an offer of £35 million will be enough to convince the Serie A club to sell.
