Manchester City would have been praying for an early goal against Barcelona in their crunch Champions League fixture.

After a 3-3 draw against Celtic and a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona, Pep Guardiola’s side needed a result against the Catalan club to help them progress to the last-16.

So, when Raheem Sterling was fouled inside the box after just 11 minutes, City fans must have been delighted that they had the perfect chance to go one-nil up from the spot.

However, they were dismayed to see the referee tell Sterling to get off the floor before brandishing him a yellow card.

As you can see in the video below, Samuel Umtiti treads on the foot of Sterling bringing down the former Liverpool star.

While the City supporters in the Etihad were rightly furious, so was everyone else on Twitter who, after seeing all the replays, couldn’t believe the decision.

Check out some of the best responses - including from BT pundit Rio Ferdinand who is in the studio to analyse the match.

Guardiola and City know only too well that they need to capitalise on every possible oportunity if they are to beat Barcelona. They had plenty of possession at Camp Nou two weeks but couldn’t convert any of their attacks and ended up on the end of a thrashing.

And City paid the ultimate price when Barcelona countered brilliantly after 21 minutes with Neymar supplying the pass for Lionel Messi to finish.

Don’t be surprised to see plenty of City personnel surrounding referee Viktor Kassai at half-time if they go in at the interval behind.
