Getting your ear flicked hard is bad enough at the best of times, but it hurts double around this time of year when the temperatures drop.

Therefore, it’s the perfect punishment for footballers who mess up either in training or a pre-match warm up.

Wayne Rooney - shock, *ahem* - miscontrolled the ball in the warm-up before Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The United skipper took his punishment like a man, receiving a flick off his right ear from Morgan Schneiderlin.

Then it was Memphis Depay’s turn to flick the same ear… (Scroll down to watch the video).

Rooney stood there, waiting for the pain, but Memphis somehow failed to hit the target.

From a couple of centimetres out, the out-of-sorts Dutchman connected with nothing but thin air.

Rooney, relieved by his teammate’s incompetence, didn’t give Memphis a second chance to make amends. All three of them saw the funny side.

“Memphis… missed,” Mark Chapman said on Match of the Day 2. “Make up your own jokes.”

United’s No. 7, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven for around £25 million in the summer of 2015, has only made a handful of appearances under Jose Mourinho this season.

Memphis came on for the final 10 minutes against Burnley at the weekend but failed to make an impact.

Memphis is failing to impress in training

According to the Manchester Evening News, the 22-year-old has been left out of the United squad for Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Fenerbahce because he hasn’t performed as well as his teammates in training.

The Netherlands international has now been omitted from seven of United’s 16 match-day squads this season - and his future at Old Trafford looks bleak.
