Considering his incredible record in front of goal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s name is usually the first on Borussia Dortmund’s team sheet.

The Gabon international scored 39 goals for BVB last season on his way to being crowned Bundesliga’s Player of the Year in 2015-16

The 27-year-old is having yet another wonderful season with 10 goals in 12 appearances this term. He’s certainly in the conversation, along with Luis Suarez and Robert Lewandowski, as the best striker in Europe.

Rumours of Aubameyang potentially leaving Dortmund have been rife over the past few years. The player himself has expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid one day.

Those rumours were cranked up a notch in the build up to Dortmund’s Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.

News broke roughly one hour before kick-off that Aubameyang had been dropped from Dortmund’s team due to “internal reasons”.

He had been expected to start this evening’s contest against the Portuguese club - indeed, his match shirt was hung up in the dressing room - but he was nowhere to be seen when the official team sheets were released.

The former AC Milan striker was seen in the stands at Signal Iduna Park as BVB attempted to book their place in the Champions League knockout stage.

According to Sky Germany, via Goal, Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed prior to kick-off that Aubameyang had been suspended by the German outfit.

Goal’s report adds that the suspension lasts until Thursday.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke refused to confirm the exact reason for Aubameyang’s omission.

“That's because of internal reasons,” Watzke told Sky Germany. The coach [Tuchel] has decided that way.

"You can ask three times. You guys live off speculations so go ahead and speculate."
