Jorge Mendes: Cristiano Ronaldo is the 'best player in history'

What a year it's been for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, the Portuguese has won Euro 2016 as Portugal captain and, most recently, was named Goal 50's best player in the world.

And as if that wasn't good enough, he's odds on to win his fourth Ballon d'Or in January.

Add all the above to Ronaldo's recent multi-million deals with Real and Nike and it's safe to say life is going pretty well for the 31-year-old superstar.

After being handed the Goal 50 trophy in Madrid, he said: "It's an honour to receive this recognition again.

"It's for all my teammates at Madrid and in the national team. I feel very happy and very proud.

"Nothing is achieved without ambition, personal effort and without a team of colleagues and workers who support you day in, day out. That, day to day, is the most important thing."

Ronaldo wouldn't be where he is today without the help of agent Jorge Mendes, who brokered his then world-record move from Manchester United in 2003.

It's proved a match made in heaven, with Mendes explaining how his achievements make him the "best ever in the history of football".

"Cristiano had a fantastic season," he told Goal. "He won the Champions League with Real Madrid, scoring 16 goals, and the European Championship with Portugal.

"And it is such a small country that victory was unthinkable. It is worth three times more than other national teams winning it.

"That's why the Goal 50 award is so deserved and I am thrilled that he is being recognised. I also have no doubt that elemental justice will be done and Cristiano will win the Ballon d'Or and be considered the best by FIFA.

"I can tell you that there is only one player in the world who can win those trophies and that player is Cristiano. The difference in level between him and the rest is so big, in whatever comparison you make.

"He is a fighter, he surpasses himself daily, and in my perspective, Cristiano is without doubt the best ever in the history of football."

It's all subjective, of course, but I imagine Lionel Messi, Pele and Maradona - but to name a few - will have a something to say about Mendes' claim.
