Gareth Southgate is expected to be handed the England job on a permanent basis following tonight’s 3-0 victory over Scotland at Wembley.
Goals from Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill secured all three points for the Three Lions in their 2018 World Cup qualifier against their British rivals.
However, not everyone was impressed by the manner of the victory. Some England fans, including the outspoken Joey Barton, thought the match was evidence that Southgate isn’t the right man for the job.
Despite the scoreline, this wasn’t a performance that will live long in the memory.
England didn’t need to play particularly well to beat a Scotland side who have won just one of their previous five fixtures.
Barton offers his views on Twitter
Barton, whose contract with Rangers was terminated earlier this week, was active on Twitter during the match - and here’s what he had to say…
“Regardless of the result, Southgate shouldn't be England manager. Lovely guy. But not experienced enough. Got to get an elite level coach.”
“Not a chance we could do anything at a major tournament in near future unless something radical happens. Very lucky to be 2 up here.”
“Can't believe England are 3-0 up how poor they have been. 3 crosses/headers. Better players convert chances. England just more efficient.”
Southgate is getting the England job...
Despite what Barton might believe, Southgate will now almost certainly be appointed as Sam Allardyce’s permanent successor.
The bookmakers now have Southgate as 1/20 to become the next England boss, followed by Roberto Mancini (10/1), Arsene Wenger (14/1) and Eddie Howe (18/1).
