Manchester United fans react to Memphis Depay's double for the Netherlands

Manchester United fought off the likes of Paris Saint-Germain in order to sign Memphis Depay in May 2015 and he arrived at Old Trafford off the back of a stunning 28-goal and title-winning campaign with PSV Eindhoven.

Many people, from Louis van Gaal and Ronald Koeman to Wayne Rooney and Arjen Robben, have stated that "he will be the best in the world" some day, however his time at United has been a major disappointment all in all and he's well and truly failed to live up to expectations.

Now under new management in the form of Jose Mourinho, things haven't really changed for Depay at club level, having not started a single league game yet this term, but the Dutchman did show the "Special One" in particular what he is capable of whilst in action for his country.

Depay at the double

The Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016, and as they attempt to not repeat that same embarrasment for the 2018 World Cup, they travelled to face Luxembourg. The score was 1-1 before Memphis came off the bench and produced a match-winning cameo.

Introduced at the half-time interval, the 22-year-old combined with United teammate and Dutch captain Daley Blind to regain their side's lead with a decent header before curling home an excellent free-kick from nearly 25 yards out to wrap up the victory six minutes from time.

United fans react

Given Depay's struggles at Man Utd, it came as no surprise that supporters of the current FA Cup holders took to Twitter to share their opinion on the youngster's brace on international duty, which moved the Dutch up into second place in Group A, only behind France.

Some United fans praised the winger for his performance, others were surprised, whilst some simply trolled him given his poor form for the Red Devils. The best of the reaction can be seen below:

There is no doubt that United's number seven has talent, and he's provided glimpses of his true potential during his time at the club, but he certainly seems to be a confidence player and maybe his latest display can help to reignite his stuttering career.
