Manchester United fans will have their own theories as to why Memphis Depay never lived up to the hype.
The Dutchman isn't the first player to struggle to adapt to the Premier League. From Diego Forlan to Angel Di Maria, United have had quite a few promising stars who didn't quite fulfil their potential.
Admittedly, Memphis is just 22-years-old, so there could be numerous reasons why he hasn't made his mark at Old Trafford.
Could it be, for example, the fierce competition in the Red Devils' squad?
It seems there could be a much more bizarre explanation than that.
Fred Rutten, the winger's former manager at PSV Eindhoven, has put the player's poor form down to one factor - he misses his Mum.
"He has a very good relationship with his mother and I think that's part of it," he told the Manchester Evening News.
"But he's still young - young players take time to develop.
"Twenty years ago, they [young players] had much more time to impress; now they have to [perform immediately]."
Memphis has disappointed
The Netherlands international has been linked with a move away from the Theatre of Dreams in January, with Everton boss and compatriot Ronald Koeman rumoured to be keen.
And Rutten has backed him to move on from United if it would help him fulfil his potential.
"Sometimes, young players, they switch clubs and then you see them come back," he added.
"There's still big young players who leave the club and in one moment they are back again and they can develop more. I believe in the boy."
It's not the first time Memphis' personal life has come to the fore. In fact, it's well known he chooses not to be known by his surname of Depay because of his relationship with his father.
Unfortunately, his life off the pitch continues to bring in more attention than his performances on it.
