Who is, on current form, the best player in the Premier League at the moment?

There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s all about opinion - and we all have our own.

For some people it might be Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who has returned to form this term following last season’s mysterious drop off. For others it might be Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho or perhaps Roberto Firmino.

The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero would also have to be up there. As would Diego Costa and Sadio Mane.

According to WhoScored, who measure players’ performances using statistics, the best player in England’s top division so far this season is Coutinho.

The Brazilian has scored five goals and registered five assists, giving him an overall rating of 8.09.

However, former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand believes another player - none of the aforementioned in this article - has been the Premier League’s standout performer.

Mesut Ozil is the 34th best PL player this season

The player in question has been rated as the 34th best player in the league so far this season - but Ferdinand would have him top of the pile.

Ian Wright and Ferdinand were discussing Mesut Ozil when the latter said: “[He’s the] best in the league at the moment.”

Fast-forward to five minutes in the video to watch the conversation…

It started when Rio asked Wright: “Ozil, though, is he world class?”

Wright responded by saying: “Of course he’s world class. What’s up with [Alan] Shearer, man?”

Wright was referring to Shearer’s recent suggestion that Aguero is currently the only world class player in the Premier League.

“What about Ozil?” Ferdinand added. “He’s won the World Cup and the Champions League.”

Ozil's best performances have come in the CL

However, it should be noted that the majority of Ozil’s goals this season have been scored in the Champions League.

The Germany international has bagged four in four in Europe, but only has three in 10 in the Premier League.

Ozil is also known as the ‘assist king’ - although he’s only set up two goals in the league so far this season.

He’ll be looking to add to his goals and assist tallies when Arsenal take on Manchester United at Old Trafford this afternoon.
