Yaya Toure, just where have you been?
The Ivorian, who hasn’t played for Manchester City since August, was brought in from the cold by Pep Guardiola to start in their game at Crystal Palace this afternoon.
And after scoring two goals, including an 83rd minute winner, the City boss will be wondering what might have been if he gave Toure another chance earlier on in the season.
The midfielder’s problems stemmed more from comments his agent, Dimitri Seluk, made, more than his own wrongdoing.
Tours issued an apology to Guardiola earlier this month “for the misunderstandings of the past”, but his agent refused to say sorry for his involvement in the rift.
The case is settled now, though, much to the relief of the City boss. Toure was the hero at Selhurst Park, opening the scoring in the first half and then netting the winner after Connor Wickham’s equaliser.
Check out Toure’s goals below.
Toure's first goal
Those City fans who have slammed Toure’s behaviour in recent months were quick to say sorry to the former Barcelona man.
And the inevitable tweet comparing Yaya to Manchester United's Paul Pogba popped up:
Level at the top
The win moves City level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League. It was a good day for the Citizens - Liverpool were held to a point by Southampton while Manchester United and Arsenal drew in the lunchtime kick-off.
So Guardiola will be delighted. Even more so at Toure’s return.
The ex-Barcelona boss will hope that Seluk provides no more distractions in the future.
"I'm not apologising," Seluk told talkSPORT, via Sky Sports. "We want peace, but I'm not apologising. Apologise for what?
"Maybe Toure has apologised for this, but I don't know for what.
"I think Yaya doesn't mean this. He wants peace between him Guardiola."
"Yaya wants to help Man City"
According to Seluk, Toure was only ever interested in helping City achieve their goals.
"A lot of supporters want to see Yaya on the field and Yaya wants to help Manchester City get good results," the agent added.
"A player like Yaya, one of the top players in the world who has a very big salary, normally does not stay out of the team. He must play.
"We want to make peace between Guardiola, Yaya and me for the supporters, the team and for the results.
"For Manchester City, the fans and for football, it is important Yaya plays because he is a top player.”
