Just imagine for a moment that it wasn't blatantly obvious who was going to win the Ballon d'Or.
It's never wise to write Lionel Messi off completely, but it's probably best to admit that Cristiano Ronaldo has this one in the bag.
CR7 has had quite the year, scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final for Real Madrid before a shock triumph at Euro 2016 for Portugal. The Ballon d'Or's just the icing on the cake.
Even those in Messi's camp have to congratulate Ronaldo on a thoroughly impressive year.
Former Real Madrid and England boss Fabio Capello is among them, as although he admits he prefers Messi as a player, he's in doubt about who's the more deserving winner of the prestigious award this time around.
“He (Ronaldo) deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this season," Capello told Fox Sports Italia, as per Goal.com.
"He’s the best player of Real Madrid and Portugal, he has won everything this season. He’s been scoring bags of goals and has great personality."
FIFA no longer play a role in choosing the winner, so it's now just down to a group of international journalists from France Football.
Ronaldo no genius
As for Capello, while you might think the ex-Los Blancos manager would be bound to pick Ronaldo, he's actually made a rather unflattering comparison with old rival Messi.
"He’s not a genius like the other one [Messi], but he’s a great player. I prefer Messi, but Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.”
Ronaldo, not a genius ... we'll have to say each to their own on that one.
Despite his injury problems at the start of the season, the Portuguese has eight goals in nine league games, and shone again with a hat-trick in the Madrid derby against Atletico.
Ronaldo vs Messi is a debate that isn't going to go away anytime soon, but we'll leave it up to you to draw your own conclusions on Capello's comments.
