Everyone has their own opinion on the Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate.
In one group you have the die-hard Messi fans who believe the Argentina international is far superior to Ronaldo. In another group you have the hardcore Cristiano fans who believe the Real Madrid superstar is a more complete footballer than the Barcelona icon.
And then there’s another smaller group - featuring Pele and the Brazilian Ronaldo, amongst others - who appear to change their tune every few months depending on how the two players are performing.
It’s a debate that has caused rifts amongst friends, colleagues and even family members.
It can also cause disagreements between former teammates, as we saw on BT Sport earlier this week.
Gerrard believes Messi is the best player ever
Steven Gerrard is firmly of the opinion that Messi is the best player on the planet.
In fact, the Liverpool legend - who announced his retirement earlier this week - believes the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the greatest footballer of all time.
“He’s an incredible footballer,” Gerrard said. “I think the best ever. The best there will ever be. It’s just an absolute pleasure to watch him.”
Gerrard explained why Messi is better than Ronaldo
Gerrard later elaborated on why he believes Messi is better than Ronaldo.
“Not only has he got incredible statistics, he’s a team player. He sets people up. His puts chances on a plate for people to get tap-ins”.
McManaman sees it differently...
Gary Lineker, another huge admirer of Messi, then asked Steve McManaman: “The best ever?”
This prompted a rather unusual reaction from McManaman who replied: “I’m with Cristiano, I think. I wouldn’t say [Messi] was better than Cristiano.”
“Is that the little bit of Real Madrid in you?” Lineker asked McManaman, who spent four years as a player at the Bernabeu.
“No. I just think Cristiano’s stats are amazing as well, aren’t they?” McManaman added.

The look on Gerrard’s face when McManaman implied Ronaldo is better than Messi, however, said everything. No words were necessary.
