Bastian Schweinsteiger set to be on the bench vs West Ham

Football News

It's fair to say that the majority of the Manchester United faithful never quite expected German hero Bastian Schweinsteiger to play for the club again.

The former Bayern Munich star, who joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2015, played a fairly prominent role under Dutchman Louis van Gaal last season but has endured a torrid past six months or so on English soil.

Indeed, since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger just hasn't had a look in. The 32-year-old was so far away from the starting XI that he wasn't even involved in first-team training earlier on this season.

But things took an interesting twist last month when Mourinho opted to once again include Schweinsteiger in first-team duties.

Until now, the central midfielder hasn't been included in one of Mourinho's squads, but that could be about to change.

The return

That's because, as tweeted by Neil Custis of The Sun, the veteran is set to be on the bench for the Red Devils' Premier League showdown against West Ham United later this afternoon.

It appears that Michael Carrick, who featured against Dutch outfit Feyenoord on Thursday night, has picked up an injury and won't be involved at the Theatre of Dreams.

It's uncertain as to who will replace Carrick in the starting XI - the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Marouane Fellaini will be hoping for a starting berth - but it appears that Schweinsteiger will be back involved for the first time in this campaign.

Anyway, you can see how United fans have reacted to the news below:

There's still every chance that Schweinsteiger will leave the club in January, but perhaps he's set to be handed one final lifeline by Mourinho.

One thing is for sure, the aging midfielder will not join another Premier League club.

He previously stated, as per Sky Sports: "MUFC will be my last club in Europe.

"I respect other clubs. But Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich.

"I will be ready, if the team needs me. This is all I can say about my current situation. I want to thank the fans for the amazing support over the last few weeks."

United fans: are you pleased that Schweinsteiger is set to be on the bench? Does he still have a future at your club? Have your say below!
