Alan Pardew vowed to fight on after Charlton fans called for his head during their 3-1 home defeat by Barnsley.
The usually mild-mannered Valley faithful chanted 'Pardew out' as a desperate performance unfolded in front of them, and a small group of supporters protested against their beleaguered manager outside ground after the final whistle.
Pardew said: "Sometimes in a season there are certain benchmarks when you have to make decisions and this is a tough week for me."
Charlton, who were expected to challenge for promotion this season, found themselves behind after just two minutes, 3-0 down at half-time and are now in the Coca-Cola Championship relegation zone.
Pardew continued: "I need to make some big decisions because that's where we are now. It's no good crawling under a stone and hiding. You have to stand and face criticism if it comes your way."
Jon Macken was Charlton's tormentor-in-chief, firing home the early opener after the hosts failed to deal with Iain Hume's free-kick. The former Manchester City striker grabbed the second in the 16th minute after Nicky Weaver had palmed away Dennis Souza's shot.
And the crowd's patience finally snapped once Darren Moore had headed home another dangerous free-kick from Robert Kozluk six minutes before the interval.
"I have to look within the squad, and maybe get a loan in," added Pardew, who dismissed reports of a move for Ipswich midfielder Ivan Campo. "I've made changes and given everyone a go, so it's probably the time now to stick with what I think is my best side.
"If that team is not good enough to beat some of the top teams then we have to accept that. But I'm sure that team will be good enough to get us out of the position we find ourselves in now.
"The crowd were frustrated which made it difficult for the younger players so I need to lean on the more experienced players in the squad to get us out of this situation."
