The images of Philippe Coutinho being stretchered off during Saturday's 2-0 win over Sunderland were worrying for every Liverpool fan.

And the early diagnosis - suggesting the Brazilian suffered ankle ligament damage - has made supporters even more apprehensive about the Reds' title chances.

Just one defeat so far this season has thrown Jurgen Klopp's men well into early contention at the Premier League's summit and much of that form has been down to Coutinho.

The 24-year-old has arguably been one of the best players in the country four months into the campaign and Liverpool's title hopes are likely to receive a huge dent if his absence from the team does indeed prove to be long-term.

Their former centre-back Jamie Carragher is one of those particularly concerned with how the Liverpool will cope without Coutinho.

The Sky Sports pundit has cast doubt on the depth of Klopp's squad, even though they do not have the burden of playing European football this season.

"It could be huge. He's Liverpool's best player," Carragher said, according to The Mirror.

"I think Liverpool's XI, playing week in week out, can match up to almost any team in the league [but] have they got the squad the other sides have got? I don't think so, to be honest.

"It is a worry going forward and it will affect them."

Injuries can often play a big role in determining who finishes the season lifting the trophy and Carragher thinks Liverpool's title bid could follow the same path as Manchester City's last year once Kevin De Bruyne became unavailable.

A knee injury picked up in January saw De Bruyne miss two crucial months of the campaign and by the time the Belgian returned to the action, City's hopes for the title had already gone up in flames.

Carragher added: "He got an injury at a similar sort of time and was out for a couple of months.

"It was a massive blow for City and it really cost them in challenging for the league. City had a better squad last season than Liverpool probably have now."

Coutinho was due to have a scan on his ankle on Monday to reveal the full extent of his knock.

And with the busy festive period on the horizon, Liverpool fans will be waiting for the results with bated breath.
