After Jose Mourinho banished Bastian Schweinsteiger from first-team training earlier this season, it looked as though we wouldn’t see the German in a Manchester United shirt ever again.
Schweinsteiger was even left out of the first-team squad photo as Mourinho completely froze him out at Old Trafford.
However, the former Bayern Munich star recently returned to training with the senior squad and even made the bench for last weekend’s Premier League clash against West Ham.
But it still seemed unlikely that we would ever see him grace the pitch for the Red Devils again.
That was until tonight. With just a few minutes remaining and United causing through to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, Schweinsteiger was brought on.
With Mourinho serving a one-match touchline ban, we’re not 100% sure it was actually his decision or his assistant’s, Rui Faria. But one thing is for sure, the United fans absolutely loved it.
Despite United eventually winning 4-1, it was Schweinsteiger’s introduction that arguably brought the loudest cheer of the night.
Just take a look at the incredible reception he received:
But it didn’t stop there. Every touch of his was then met with a massive cheer. Just imagine the scenes if he had scored with his shot that flashed narrowly wide.
United fans on Twitter were also loving the return of Schweinsteiger. Check out the best reaction:
All in all, it was the perfect night for the Red Devils.
A brace from Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw them cruise past West Ham, despite David de Gea’s first-half error that allowed Ashley Fletcher to equalise.
Will this substitute appearance be the sign of things to come for Schweinsteiger as he continues his return to first-team football? Or was it simply a farewell to the United fans before he’s sold in January?
Either way, it was a special occasion for the World Cup winner after what must have been a nightmare few months.
