Phil Jones hailed after producing an accidental ‘no-look header’ against West Ham

Phil Jones has become a figure of ridicule over the past few years.

The 24-year-old, famous for gurning during matches and making tackles with his head, has been plagued with various injuries since joining Manchester United from Blackburn in 2011.

Few United fans thought he had a future at Old Trafford but, against the odds, Jones appeared to have salvaged his career with the Red Devils over the past few weeks.

He made his first start for United since January against Swansea City last month, following Eric Bailly’s injury, and has featured in all four of his side’s matches since.

Jones hasn’t looked out of place in United’s back four and played the full 90 minutes in the 4-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday night.

Jones accidentally produced best skill of the match

During the 28th minute of the match, Jones produced the best skill of the match.

Of course he didn’t mean it, but that makes it all the funnier. It was classic Phil Jones.

Twitter reacts

Here’s how United fans reacted on Twitter…

Jones has a future at Man Utd

If Jones can continue to perform and, crucially, avoid another long-term injury then he has an excellent chance of establishing himself as one of United’s first-choice centre-backs.

This is a defender who Sir Alex Ferguson once tipped to become the best player in Manchester United’s history. No, really.

“You saw Jones tonight,” Ferguson said as United clinched the 2013 Premier League title. “Arguably, the way he is looking, he could be our best-ever player.”

While it’s still unlikely that he’ll surpass the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Ryan Giggs, Jones undoubtedly has a future at United.
