It’s now three months since Shkodran Mustafi signed for Arsenal in a £35 million deal from Valencia.
However, the Germany international can still walk around London without getting recognised by everyone, as the boxer Amir Khan proved this week.
Khan was invited by Mesut Ozil to watch Arsenal’s League Cup quarter-final match against Southampton in his VIP box at the Emirates Stadium.
He accepted the invite and watched the match with pals.
However, before the game kicked off, Khan inadvertently blanked Mustafi because he thought the German was a security guard.
Why Khan blanked Mustafi
Khan, after realising his mistake, made amends by taking photos alongside the Gunners’ defender.
“Good to see @skodranmustafi,” Khan, a Bolton Wanderers fan, posted on Instagram. “I walked past the poor guy thinking he was the security in the VIP boxes. My bad bro. I just come off a dubai flight 😂“
Khan also uploaded a video of himself with Ozil, who missed the match against the Saints.
Disappointing night for Arsenal
Arsenal spurned the opportunity to seal their place in the semi-finals.
Jordy Clasie opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Ryan Bertrand extended the visitors’ lead in the 38th minute.
Wenger frustrated after surprise defeat
Arsene Wenger told reporters, per the Guardian, after the match: “I’m disappointed.
“We had a disappointing performance, particularly in the first half. I think we were not good enough defensively and gave cheap goals away.
“It was better in the second, but it was one of those nights where you look like you could play two hours without scoring a goal. We didn’t have enough urgency in the first half and were weak in some departments. We paid for that.
“We were not incisive enough and they were sharper than us and fitter. If you give someone a handicap of two goals, against a Premier League side it’s difficult. We had players out there who are used to top-level competition, but we didn’t have the right urgency.”
