There are many footballers who would benefit from taking a leaf out of James Milner’s book.
The 30-year-old is a manager’s dream. He gives 100 per cent during every match and every training session, he plays wherever his manager wants him to play and, crucially, he never seems to complain about anything.
Milner is the professional’s professional and opposing players know they have a battle on their hands whenever they come up against the versatile Liverpool winger.
Dani Alves, a player who has played with and against the best footballers of the current generation during his illustrious career, paid Milner a huge compliment when he named the Englishman as the most ‘annoying’ opponent he’s ever played against.
“I have faced many, but the most annoying was James Milner,” Alves told the Times earlier this year. “He follows you forward and follows you backwards. It's very difficult because he attacks you and defends you, and then attacks you and defends you again.”
Many Premier League players would probably agree with the Brazilian full-back.
And some of his current teammates might say Milner is even annoying to play against in training, because he never stops.
Video: Milner dominates five-a-side match in training
Footage of a five-a-side match at Liverpool’s training ground has been released today and it shows Milner dominating proceedings.
The indefatigable central midfielder can be seen scoring goals, providing assists, making tackles and producing a couple of terrific blocks.
If you want to know why Milner has represented England on 61 occasions and played for the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa as well as Liverpool then look no further.
Managers long to find players with Milner’s work ethic.
And you can understand why Klopp, after watching Milner dominate the five-a-side match, gave the team’s vice-captain a rather formal handshake at the end of the session.
