Football News

It’s not been a good few weeks for Jonjo Shelvey.

The Newcastle United midfielder is already facing a five-match ban after being charged by the Football Association for allegedly abusing, in racial terms, Wolves’ Romain Saiss back in September.

Shelvey has contested the charge and a hearing will begin in the week beginning 19 December.

And this evening, during Newcastle’s Championship match against Nottingham Forest away at the City Ground, the one-time England international was shown a straight red card in the first half following an off-the-ball altercation with Henri Lansbury.

Shelvey stupidly kicked out following a coming together inside the penalty area, the assistant referee spotted the incident and referee Steve Martin was left with no choice but to show the red card. (Scroll down to watch the incident).

In fairness to Shelvey, Lansbury more than played his part in the ref’s decision to brandish a straight red card because of his over-the-top reaction.

But there can be no defending Shelvey: his actions were idiotic and Rafa Benitez will be having words with the 24-year-old after the match, there’s no doubt about that.

Shelvey now facing potential nine-match ban

According to the Daily Mail’s north east football correspondent, Craig Hope, Shelvey is now in danger of missing the next nine matches is found guilty by the FA of a misconduct charge.

Newcastle fans react on Twitter

Here’s how Newcastle fans have reacted to Shelvey’s latest misdemeanour…

Shelvey must sort his temperament out

While Shelvey is clearly a talented footballer, he has struggled with temperament issues throughout his career.

And unless he improves that side of his game, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever fulfil his huge potential.
