Roque Santa Cruz returned from injury to help fire Blackburn into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 at Sunderland.

The Paraguay international came off the bench to give his side a 65th-minute lead, and the tie looked to be over when Black Cats full-back Phil Bardsley diverted the ball into his own net five minutes later.

Kenwyne Jones pulled one back within seconds, but it was too little, too late for Sunderland as Rovers held out.
