Wigan boss Steve Bruce has not given up on the idea of managing Newcastle, the club he supported as a boy.

Bruce was offered the chance to take his dream job when Sir Bobby Robson left the club in 2004.

The former Birmingham manager said: "The only genuine opportunity I had was after Sir Bobby left. But I'd just signed a new deal at Birmingham and signed five or six players that summer; I felt out of loyalty to Birmingham at the time that I couldn't go. Do I regret it? Yes of course."

He added: "They were my club when I was a boy and I used to crawl under the turnstiles to watch them."

He added: "Will I ever manage Newcastle? I don't know. Maybe one day.

"You never know because football sends you down many paths."
